Here is my list and a brief description of what 5 2D RPG games I feel had the largest impact, best story, and best characters. It's just my opinion, so don't get mad if you disagree.
5. Lunar: Silver Star Story Complete -It's Lunar! Enough said right there! It's a 2d made like an old school SNES game but with cut scenes! What could be better!? The graphics were very unique using a 2D style with the advanced graphics from the PSX which lead to it's beautiful cut scenes. I still have the soundtrack disc which also came with the game. And I totally loved getting the pictures of people! I liked this one way more than the original version of it, which lacked some back story and some characters, so the remake is most definitely a step in the right direction!
4. Final Fantasy IV -Everyone knows A lot of the Final Fantasy Antagonists are over emotional, dark creatures who battle themselves just as much as they battle their opponents. Final Fantasy IV took this as part of the storyline, having Cecil transform from a Dark Knight into a Paladin. It is one of the most epic FF games in my opinion. Cecil and Rosa's love is also a nice high note in the game, and unlike many 'tortured hero' type games, the love interest doesn't die! Yay! The characters are pretty fun, the only thing that got annoying was Tellah's inability to level up! It is one of the harder Final Fantasy games I've played which is a good thing, as some are too easy.
3. Earthbound -Not at all your regular RPG! It is set in what appears to be about present day, you save at payphones, you get money from the ATM, and you fight with yoyo's and frying pans! When you get strong weak enemies run from you so they don't waste your time, and the pop culture references are too funny! It's a game that pokes fun at Americans and Japanese people for all the crap of the early 90's! We've all seen saved by the bell, we all know how stupid it was. Haha. IT wasn't well received in America as the RPG not being a huge deal until FF7 came along, but Earthbound is one of the funniest games I have ever played! I hope it is released on the virtual console!
2. Phantasy Star 4 -Intergalactic bounty hunters, Corrupt leaders, Things from other planets, and width*height proportional characters... It can only mean one thing! Phantasy Star! And in this case specifically the 4th installment. This is Sega's RPG flagship! PS4 being perhaps the best of the Phantasy Star Title, and the last good one if you ask me! One of my favorite parts of this game is the fact that the female character pwns! That was quite lacking back in the day! It is also one of the best games to grace the Sega Genesis Console!
1. Final Fantasy II -People didn't like it! Many fans just didn't like it! I think it was the lack of a leveling system, which I thought this was way better! It is the First Final Fantasy title to have customized characters with back stories and everything! You even fight against your bff! WTF! The only thing that makes the game a little annoying at times if the constant run around of the 4th character as it is always changing and when you get the last one, his level is so low you have to spend a lot of time leveling him up! But anyway, I Loved it, loved everything about it! Just loved it!
Thanks for reading! If you have a beef let me know.
This list was a little bit harder to make as RPG's didn't get super popular until FF7 got people hooked so the 2D RPG is a little bit more rare. Not to mention I haven't played a lot of them as they are hard to find.

Nice picks. I've been considering getting Final Fantasy IV, the remake for the DS. I also like the way you wrote this review. (:
I was wondering, have you ever played Dragon Quest IV, and if you have, what was your opinion of it? [/sup]

I've never played it, but I do own it! I think my friend got it for me for Christmas, or my birthday, or some other inconsequential day of the year, but I know it was in the top hand held games of the year. I have played a few Dragon Quest games and did like them, but to me they are always kind of behind Final Fantasy, kind of like Square's plan B. I might be able to play through it soon, and post a review.

All right, if you would write a review at some point, that would be great~. I haven't played many DS games, so I want to know if that would be a good one to try. x3 [/sup]

I will probably start it at some point over this weekend while painting. For DS games, try Lunar Dragon Song, FF3 or FF4, 4 is long! Golden Sun is also a good series, so I will probably put a review of the DS game after that comes out.

Duuuuude.
I have FFIV For the DS.
Everyone is level 80+ and the final boss still rapes me, because as far as I know there is no HP break item and the boss does four nines of damage.
But srsly. The storyline in FF4 is to die for. Best DS game in terms of Storyline, and general playability.

Loved FF4 I played it halfway through on the PSx and then my best friend lost it! So that is where I finished playing it through on the GBA! I also own the one for DS and love it!

Okay, thank you, Kronos~.
My interest in FFIV is piqued. It appears to be an awesome game. Also, the graphics are pretty good for a DS game, although that might just be my perception since I don't play many DS games, heh. [/sup]
