Fushigi Yuugi Animanga Review Ah, Fushigi Yuugi, Fushigi Yuugi. Whatever am I to do with you?
Opening theme. Itooshi Hito no Tame ni by Satoo Akemi. Ending theme. Tokimeki no Dookasen by Konno Yukari Total Episodes: 52 Total Volumes: 18
Let me make one thing clear: I hate, hate, hate this animanga. I try not to be biased. But I just…hate it. No, no – that’s too strong a word. But. The art. The art…is just awful. It’s ugly. In both the anime and the manga, with the anime a slight improvement. I have nothing against Watase Yuu-sensei in general – I like her other works, particularly Alice 19th, and the prequel of FY, Fushigi Yuugi: Genbu Kaiden. But – Fushigi Yuugi is an older animanga, and therefore the art is old as well.
Which makes it, by my standards, ugly. I’m sorry. That’s just how it is. It’s also why I can’t stand to watch (or read) most older anime, or manga. The art just doesn’t appeal to me. I have to find the art the least bit attractive if I want to read or watch any further.
There was nothing wrong with the plot. It was actually a rather good one (if not a tad “cliché” by today’s standards). Yuuki Miaka, a regular fifteen year old junior high school student, accompanies her best friend Yui to a library. Within it they find a book called The Universe of the Four Gods, after which they are then transported to the universe of the four gods. Miaka must become the priestess of Suzaku (one of the aforementioned four gods) so that she may be able to return to her world, and in order to do so she must collect the seven celestial constellations of Suzaku. No, no, there was nothing wrong with the plot. There wasn’t even all that much wrong with the characters. I particularly liked Nuriko, who was rather amusing. (Hmm, I seem to like cross dressers for some reason…probably because they’re so oddly quirky.)
The thing I found wrong about Fushigi Yuugi was, first and foremost, the art. And, secondly –
“MIAKA!” “TAMAHOME!” “MIAKA!” “TAMAHOME!” “MIAKA!” “TAMAHOME!”
…And etc.
Many conversations consist of names only. With Miaka screaming the main male protagonist’s name all the time. And said male protagonist screaming her name.
Also, every single man manages to fall in love with Miaka.
AND.
The final thing that got me hurling the manga (or anime, in which case I would throw my television, whichever you prefer) across the room?
The fact that Miaka decides she is in love with Tamahome in ONE MANGA VOLUME (equivalent to five anime episodes, I think?) when there was absolutely NO chemistry or even signs of “love” at all. (Unless you count “oh my god he is so hot” as a sign of love.) It’s not that I’m ridiculing “love at first sight”, it’s simply because there was absolutely nothing to indicate any sort of love, from either side. I like realism in my manga or anime, thank you very much – that means appropriate character development.
I realize that this entire review is composed of nonsensical ranting, but it must be done. Fushigi Yuugi is just not to my taste, and I like being honest. I apologize if I offended any FY fans. I just…don't like this animanga, and that is all.
3/10 stars (1 star for plot, 2 for Nuriko)
